The Good: Jack dying in the exact same spot where the series opened; ending on a close-up of his eye closing, where the series began with a close-up of his eye opening. And it was sweet of the writers to send Vincent to lay next to him, so he didn’t have to die alone.
The Bad: I DON’T THINK WE SURVIVED THAT CRASH, DAD.
Okay, so I guess the island and everything that happened on it was real (ie. NOT PURGATORY, as Matthew Fox and the writers have been yelling for the past 6 seasons). Otherwise why would Widmore fake a crash, and a bajillion other things I could point out. Sideways World was some weird thing where everyone who has died or will eventually die come together at once and you have to bond with the people who were most important to you before you get to move on into the light, led by a mean drunk who just happens to be named “Christian Shepherd”, like SUBTLE, GUYS.
So what the hell was Jack’s son, if he never existed? Jack working through his daddy issues? Why were some people missing, like Michael and WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALT? Ha ha, no one cares about you Michael, you suck! What was the point of making their lives so different from reality? Was it some kind of wish fullfillment (which seems like the opposite of Purgatory to me)?? Also: Boone and Shannon? Really?? If Sideways World wasn’t an alternate reality, did the H-bomb reset not work? Did Faraday forget to carry the 1 — you know what, I’m not even going to continue, because down that road lies madness. You could spend the rest of your life parsing the shit that never got resolved on this show.
And the most pressing question: WHAT THE HELL AM I GOING TO OBSESSIVELY WATCH AND DISCUSS WITH NERDS ON THE INTERNETS NOW???
WHAT IS THIS I DON’T EVEN
p.s. I’m actually pretty much okay with the ending, overall. It was better than fucking Battlestar Galactica, ugh what WAS that. We all knew that 99% of this shit was never going to tie together in the end, but I can live with what they gave us.
