academy of the sacred heart

Here are some photos I took of the Academy of the Sacred Heart. It’s always weird to me to be in buildings that old, having lived my whole life in California where almost nothing is more than 100 years old. The floors were wicked uneven, it smelled like mildew, and there was enough exposed wiring to give an OSHA inspector heart palpitations. Even The Winchester Mystery House is not that rickety; actually, Sarah Winchester was some kind of mad natural genius when it came to architecture.

Note the pile of bricks that have apparently fallen out of the facade just casually piled to one side.

It's huge. It's still a working Catholic girl's school (and one of some renown), but they don't board near as many of their students as they used to.

I don't know if anyone actually uses this staircase to get into the organ loft. It made me dizzy just to look at it.
