One silver lining to having the cold from hell is that it provides a handy excuse to not give a wingding about balanced meals or calories, and just eat whatever the hell I want.
I had a mad craving for a croque monsieur this week. I make mine with ham and gruyère cheese, a little Dijon mustard, and good hearty white bread — not that spongy Wonder crap. But I have a little twist on mine: I like to dip the entire sandwich in a beaten egg with salt, pepper, and nutmeg before I fry it. Essentially it’s a sandwich made with French toast. The taste of nutmeg is awesome with ham and alpine cheeses; the sum of the parts is a perfect balance of sweet with savory.
Continuing this theme, I made mine with some sweet potato fries sprinkled with a little kosher salt and Sweet Treat, which I always get a can of when I go home to Louisiana.
